Nepal Faces High Disaster Risk Despite Predicted Below-Average Monsoon Rainfall

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has warned that over 1.9 million people could be affected by monsoon-related disasters this year. Despite the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) projecting below-average rainfall, rising temperatures and extreme weather events are expected to increase the risk of floods and landslides. The government has released a draft of the Monsoon Preparedness and Response National Action Plan 2026 to address these challenges. Experts attribute the changing weather patterns to El Niño and shifts in the Indian Ocean Dipole.
